What Is Holistic Medicine?

Holistic Medicine is defined by the Canadian Holistic Medical Association as follows.

Holistic medicine is a system of health care which fosters a cooperative relationship among all those involved, leading towards optimal attainment of the physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual aspects of health.

It emphasizes the need to look at the whole person, including analysis of physical, nutritional, environmental, emotional, social, spiritual and lifestyle values. It encompasses all stated modalities of diagnosis and treatment including drugs and surgery if no safe alternative exists. Holistic medicine focuses on education and responsibility for personal efforts to achieve balance and well being.

Suzan Walter, President of the American Holistic Health Association (AHHA), put together an excellent summary of the principals of Holistic Health. The summary can be found on the AHHA Web Page. For those unfamiliar with Holistic Medicine, I strongly encourage reading this short summary.

Other Terms Associated with Holistic Medicine

Alternative Medicine is often used by the general public and some healthcare practitioners to refer to medical techniques which are not known or accepted by the majority "conventional" or "allopathic" medical practitioners (usually MD's). Such techniques could include non-invasive, non-pharmaceutical techniques such as Medical Herbalism, Acupuncture, Homeopathy, Reiki, and many others. However, the term Alternative Medicine can also refer to any experimental drug or non-drug technique that is not currently accepted by "conventional" medical practitioners. As non-invasive, non-pharmaceutical techniques become popular and accepted by large number of "conventional" practitioners, these techniques will no longer be considered Alternative Medicine.

Alternative Medicine refers to techniques that are not currently accepted by "conventional" practitioners, but what is currently accepted is quickly changing. Even the definition of "conventional practitioners" is quickly changing. Therefore, techniques that are now considered part of Alternative Medicine will soon be considered part of "conventional" medicine. The terms Holistic Healing and Holistic Medicine are slightly more stable than Alternative Medicine and are therefore preferable.

Complementary Medicine is often used by "conventional" medical practitioners to refer to non-invasive, non-pharmaceutical techniques used as a complement to "conventional" medical treatments such as drugs and surgery. The term implies that "conventional" medicine is used as a primary tool and the non-invasive, non-pharmaceutical techniques are used as a supplement when needed.

In many cases, properly chosen non-invasive and non-pharmaceutical healing techniques plus properly chosen lifestyle changes can completely and safely heal both acute and chronic illnesses. In other cases, "conventional" medicine is only needed in emergencies or when the safer non-invasive, non-pharmaceutical methods fail. In some cases "conventional" medicine will be a major part of a Holistic Healing Plan, but in some cases it is not needed at all.

Natural Healing usually refers to the use of non-invasive and non-pharmaceuticals techniques to help heal the patient. When most people use the term Natural Healing, they are usually referring to physical healing techniques only.

Howard Lim
Corporate Branding, Disney, Cartoon Network

Howard Lim

Howard Lim was born to brand! At the age of 5, his first experience of finger painting was the start of it all. It was clear he was the conduit between great ideas and HOW to materialize them into reality. Howard had the good fortune while mastering the craft of branding to be an apprentice under the wings of world renowned brand leaders; such as, Greg Hutchensen, who created the world famous Christian Dior brand identity, Robert Densham, who created the national brand for Midstate Bank, and Howard’s brother, Dennis Lim, who created the ‘Think Different’ global brand campaign for Apple, and who also contributed to bringing Honda and Saturn to market. He spent 8 intense college years in multiple disciplines, earning a BS in Applied Art and Design from Cal Poly and completing graduate studies in advertising and computer graphics from Art Center of Design in Pasadena. Howard created HOW Studios in 1987, and since then continuously leads industries by creating innovative brand solutions and new categories for fortune 100s to Start- Ups. Howard exceeds the expectations of clients like Apple, DreamWorks, Disney, Paramount, Xerox, Claris, Honda and Toshiba among others. Howard is the bridge between fundamentals, innovation, creativity, and technology with high return on investment. Although having a healthy portfolio with fortune 100 companies, his greatest passion is with Start-Ups, and companies that need to rebrand for greater market share. Stewart Levine
Esq., Legal

Stewart Levine
Stewart Levine is a creative problem solver widely recognized for creating agreement and empowerment in the most challenging circumstances. His innovative work with “Agreements for Results” and his “Resolutionary” conversational models are unique. As a practicing lawyer, he realized that fighting was a very ineffective way of resolving problems, and as a marketing executive for AT&T, he saw that the reason collaborations fall apart is that people do not spend the time at the beginning of the new working relationship to create clarity about what they want to accomplish together and how they will get there. His book “Getting to Resolution: Turning Conflict into Collaboration” (Berrett-Koehler 1998) was an Executive Book Club Selection; it was featured by Executive Book Summaries; named on of the 30 Best Business Books of 1998; and called “a marvelous book” by Dr. Stephen Covey. It has been translated into Russian, Hebrew and Portuguese. “The Book of Agreement” (Berrett-Koshler 2003) has been endorsed by many thought leaders. It has been hailed as “more practical” than the classic “Getting to Yes”, and was named one of the best books of 2003 by CEO Refresher (www.Refresher.com). He teaches communication and conflict management skills for the American Management Association and IBI Global. CLP continues to benefit from his models, workshops, training and coaching.
