Business
wants patrons to save green
Entrepreneur launches network to help find Earth
friendly products
BY MARIA SONNERBERG
FOR FLORIDA TODAY
There're savings in numbers, figured Shannon Burnett.
That's one of the reasons the Palm Bay resident used her experience in
marketing and business development to launch Conscious Living
Partnership, a network of green and healthy living businesses in the
area.
"We've attracted some really heavy hitters," Burnett said.
"This is the wave of the future."
Members can access a nationwide directory of companies that promise
discounts for environmentally friendly or natural health products.
"Most of our members see the environment and natural health going hand
in hand," Burnett said.
The partnering businesses comprise an interesting mix of the
traditional and the new wave, from animal healing to realtors.
"They want to be part of a community that's making a difference,"
Burnett said.
Businesses can also receive discounts from each other and barter for
products and services.
Several of the partners are involved with the United States Green
Building Council.
For $25 a year, consumers can tap onto savings, such as 10 percent
discount at Nature's Market and 5 percent with Casa Verde Hardware, a
store that specializes in environmentally friendly products.
"The concept of the organization is awesome," said Casa Verde owner
Isabel Strzepka.
Customers are also invited to a quarterly appreciation party that
features gourmet food and drink.
"We want them to become part of the family," Burnett said.
"We've had one consumer say they saved $380 in one year," Burnett said.
The group has branches in Indian River County and in San Diego.
The Partnership's Web site, which Burnett says is managed by a
Discovery Channel webmaster, is an interesting resource for
environmentally friendly and holistic lifestyle ideas.
Every Tuesday at 9 p.m., Burnett hosts a radio show on
tropicwaveradio.net that features guests such as David Godfrey, founder
of the World Green Building Council.

Woman
Promotes Healthy Living
BY RAY OSBORNE
FOR FLORIDA TODAY
PALM BAY Shannon Burnett knows how to
reach an audience.
The mother of two from Palm Bay is more than five years into a project
designed to help people learn more about natural and alternative health
services, and her following is growing.
Her weekly Internet show "Secrets
to Healthy Living" is heard at 9 p.m.
Tuesdays on Tropic Wave Radio (http://www.tropicwaveradio.net). Callers discuss
issues and ask questions in the real-time program.
Her Conscious Living Partnership, which she started in April 2001, has
grown to a long list small businesses that offer services and goods for
the well-being of their communities.
The latest addition to Burnett's
partnership is a hardware store in Melbourne. Casa Verde Hardware, a
business specializing in environmentally friendly products, opened in
December on Babcock Street in Melbourne.
The CLP was an organization I wanted to belong to because their
philosophy parallels ours, Isabel Strzepka, owner of the store. It is
very encouraging to know that there are people out there who feel like
we do that we have to take care of the world and ourselves better than
we have been lately.
Burnett likes to stay involved in her community.
We are excited that environmentally friendly store such as Casa Verde
Hardware join the CLP network, she said.
At the store's grand opening,
Isabel, her husband Ken and son Logan shared with members of the
partnership many of the products that are designed to not to harm our
environment.
My business is about giving people a healthy alternative to the
everyday home maintenance and home improvement products, Ken said. We want to educate and
make accessible to everyone products which not only save their health
and the health of their families but also help them save money and in
turn help the environment.
In addition to Casa Verde, a wide range of businesses in Palm Bay and
elsewhere are listed on Burnett's
website (www.consciouslivingpartnership.org).
The biggest benefit for Palm Bay and Brevard County, is our Consumer
Discount Club which allows members to save on services from local
natural health services and retail stores, she said.
As the expansion of CLP grows, local members will be able to take
advantage of services from business across the nation.

Thank You to CLP
from Crosswinds for Making This Possible!
Dear Shannon,
We appreciate so very much the extremely strong partnership that
Crosswinds and the Conscious Living Partnership have built which has
been recognized as a national model. We know that you are wisely
very cautious about who you develop partnerships with because the
publicity those organizations receive - positive and negative -
reflects on you.
With this in mind, we wanted to alert you and your employees to an
article in yesterday's Florida Today which is extremely positive
regarding Crosswinds making a tremendous difference in Brevard County
by changing countless young people's lives for the better, and often
even saving their lives.
The reporter spent a great deal of time researching, interviewing, and
writing this story and we are thrilled that her conclusion about the
organization is so complimentary.
Please know and please let all your members
know, that your support makes it possible for us to help countless kids
in crisis and to make their lives better and our entire community much
better. It is an honor for us to be associated with you.
Thanks for everything.
Take care,
Jim Ross

Elizabeth Hess
Stamper to Speak on Department of Peace
January, 2004
Special guest to
speak about the Department of Peace On Tuesday, January 13, 2004,
at the CLP monthly social, Elizabeth Hess Stamper will share
information about the landmark bill before Congress to establish a
Cabinet level Department of Peace. The social begins at 5:30 pm at the
Health Station on A1A in Indialantic, and the talk is scheduled for
6:30 pm. This new legislation to create a Dept. of Peace focuses on
domestic and international responsibilities of holding peace as an
organizing principle. It focuses on non-military conflict resolutions,
the prevention of violence and the promotion of just and democratic
principles that expand human rights. The bill already has over 50
co-sponsors in the House of Representatives. A Department of Peace is a
natural outgrowth of our times – we are tired of the costs and
consequences of violence – whether interpersonal or international – and
we are seeking the answers that not only resolve conflict but address
its root causes, and prevent its genesis. The United States, as a world
leader, has the opportunity to lead the way to a safer and more
peaceful world and challenge the old paradigm that war and violence are
inevitable. For more information about the Dept. of Peace, see "www.DOPCampaign.org"
or call Elizabeth at 321-777-6216. For additional information or

Conscious Living Partnership
Nominated for Governors Award
Conscious Living Partnership (CLP) has been nominated for the
Governor’s Community Investment Award by Crosswinds Youth Services, Inc
– a not-for-profit organization serving runaway, homeless, and other
youth in crisis. “Because the support provided by Conscious Living
Partnership has been so significant and appreciated, we felt it was
very appropriate,” says Jim Ross the Vice President for Development at
Crosswinds.
Conscious Living Partnership worked together to purchase
and sell duck adoptions to support The Great Brevard Duck Race, which
benefited Crosswinds. The members held their quarterly meeting at
Crosswinds and toured the shelter to learn more about the organization
and how they could help. “Shannon Burnett, CLP’s president, is a truly
wonderful, caring, and inspirational human being. She has donated more
than 100 hours to Crosswinds. She has been a tremendous asset to our
organization as she has provided extremely valuable advice,
introductions, and support this past year,” says Jim Ross. “She was one
of the leading raisers of funds. Shannon is an inspiration for all of
us within the organization and we are very thankful that we have found
her and Conscious Living Partnership.”
This year as Conscious Living Partnership’s first year
as a partner in the Duck Race, they had a tremendous first year
campaign. The money provided by Conscious Living Partnership helped
Crosswinds’ serve the 29% overall increase of youth this year in its
programs.

Governor and Florida
Cabinet Honor Crosswinds for National Recognition As Best In America
Governor Jeb Bush and the Florida Cabinet
recently honored Crosswinds Youth Services for
earning national recognition as the best organization of its kind in
America.
The Cabinet approved a resolution stating that the national recognition
makes this Brevard County organization "an inspirational national model
of excellence for others to follow."
The recognition the Florida Cabinet was responding to was the National
Network for Youth naming Crosswinds "the best organization in
America serving runaway, homeless, and other youth in crisis"
in presenting it the national 2003 Agency of the Year Award. The
National Network, in existence for 28 years, is a group of over 800
member organizations throughout America who are champions for young
people.
The Florida Cabinet resolution praised Crosswinds as "a rare type of
non-profit organization that operates with the precision and efficiency
of a business while staying true to its core mission of helping young
people and their families."
It stated that Crosswinds "should be a model for the entire nation in
how to lead people of all races, ages, professions, and political
parties" to bring about great accomplishments for our youth.
Agriculture and Consumer Affairs Commissioner Charles Bronson, a former
State Senator from Brevard County, stated that Crosswinds has earned
numerous quality assurance honors and has a commendable record of
stability by providing assistance to youth on Florida's Space Coast for
the past 29 years.
Bronson praised Crosswinds for developing "an extraordinary level of
business and community funding and overall support." He stated that
this support, combined with governmental support, has made possible
Crosswinds' new $1.6 million children's shelter, which Bronson called
"one of our nation's most impressive new residential facilities to help
youth in need."
Crosswinds President Jan Lokay provided comments thanking the Cabinet
and accepting the resolution on behalf of all citizens of Brevard
County. She praised the Crosswinds Board, staff, volunteers, and
business partners for helping young people have opportunities for
success in life.
Florida Attorney General Charlie Crist; Governor Jeb
Bush; Agriculture and Consumer Affairs Commissioner Charlie Bronson;
and CFO Tom Gallagher present a Florida Cabinet Resolution honoring
Crosswinds Youth Services to President Jan Lokay and Board members
Shannon Wilson-Farmer; Sam Barber; Cynthia Handley; Jack Parker; and
Dr. Bob Lehton.
Dear
Shannon,
This e-mail is to provide good news to you and the members of Conscious
Living Partnership. Through Crosswinds’ Great Brevard Duck Race, your
organization and members developed a partnership with Crosswinds Youth
Services. We realize it is extremely important to you to know that the
non-profit organizations you have partnerships with are highly regarded
for doing good work. When you strongly support organizations, as you
have supported us, you share the goodwill when success arrives. Please
find below information regarding Governor Jeb Bush and the Florida
Cabinet recently honoring Crosswinds. We share this honor with you and
the Conscious Living Partnership members because your support has made
it possible for us to earn this prestigious distinction. The
involvement of Conscious Living Partnership and the members has
resulted in significant amounts of donations for Crosswinds. We thank
you for strengthening Crosswinds. Because of your support, Crosswinds
is able to help more young people have opportunities for success.
Thanks for all you have done for Crosswinds and the young people we
serve. We are honored to have your support... and friendship! Please
feel free to share this with all of your wonderful members.
Take care,
Jim Ross
